Grandpa's Knob Windpark, VT

At a glance:

Location: Rutland County, Vermont

Size: 60 MW

Status: Under Development

In 1941, the mountaintop known as Grandpa's Knob in Rutland County, Vermont, made wind energy history: it was home to the world's first megawatt-size wind turbine that successfully delievered  power into an electric utility's system. Today, Noble Environmental Power is excited to follow in the footsteps of those who pioneered the world's first modern wind turbine on Grandpa's Knob. Click here to learn more about the history of Grandpa's Knob.
With its good wind resource, Grandpa's Knob is ideally positioned to provide economic and clean energy benefits resulting from a state-wide initative to increase electric power generation from renewable energy sources. Noble is currently assessing the ridgeline in Castleton, Hubbardton, Pittsford, and West Rutland to determine its suitability for a windpark. Our initial estimates suggest that Grandpa's Knob could support up to a 60 megawatt windpark, which would yield the following benefits for communities:

      Clean, plentiful, affordable energy

  • Wind energy is 100% clean and renewable. Unlike fossil fuel power plants, wind energy creates no pollution - no acid rain, no smog, and no mercury, which is a harmful toxin, particulary to women and children. Read more about energy and the environment on our FAQs page.
  • Vermont has abundant wind energy resources. Studies show that the region could get more than 10% of its electricity from wind and still impact less than 2% of the state's ridgelines!
  • A windpark along Grandpa's Knob could create enough clean energy to provide the annual electricity needs of approximately 20,000 homes - that's more than 50% of the housing units in Rutland County! Ever wonder how the "homes powered" number is calculated? Click here to find out.

      Economic benefits

  • The Grandpa's Knob Windpark would involve a total investment of up to $100 million.
  • Tax payments from Grandpa's Knob would help reduce local taxes without putting a corresponding demand on municipal services. Read about how wind energy benefits the economy on our FAQ page.
  • Lease payments to participating landowners and purchases from local vendors and service providers would significantly contribute to the local economy.
